Not every job or industrial attachment opportunity in Zambia is advertised online. Sometimes an organisation needs someone, but the position never reaches a job board or newspaper. Other opportunities are filled through referrals, direct applications, previous interns, or people who simply took the initiative to approach the company.

This means that if you are only checking job boards every morning and waiting for the right advert to appear, you could be missing opportunities.

Sometimes, you have to go looking for the opportunity yourself.

Here are some practical ways to find jobs and attachments that may never be publicly advertised.

1. Use LinkedIn Properly

LinkedIn can be useful for more than just uploading your CV.

Some companies and recruiters use LinkedIn to find potential candidates, particularly for professional and corporate positions.

Instead of having a profile that simply says:

"Student at The University of Zambia"

you can make your profile more specific.

For example:

Mechanical Engineering Student | Maintenance & Manufacturing | CAD | Industrial Attachment

Or:

Finance & Accounting Graduate | Accounting | Tax | Excel

Your profile should tell someone who visits it what you do and what type of opportunity you are looking for.

Follow companies in your industry

Look for companies you would genuinely like to work for and follow their pages.

You can also follow people working in departments related to your career, such as:

• Human Resources

• Engineering

• Maintenance

• Finance

• Procurement

• Operations

• Information Technology

Don't immediately send someone a message asking:

"Sir, give me a job."

Build a professional connection first.

If they share something relevant to your field, you can engage with it constructively.

2. Apply Directly to Companies

This is particularly useful when looking for industrial attachments, internships and entry-level opportunities.

You don't always have to wait for a company to publish:

"Applications are invited for..."

If there is a company where you believe you can gain relevant experience, find out how they receive applications and send yours.

For an engineering student, for example, you might identify:

• Manufacturing companies

• Mining companies

• Engineering contractors

• Water utilities

• Processing plants

• Workshops

• Construction companies

• Power and energy companies

The same approach can work for students and graduates in other fields.

Find the right person

If possible, identify the relevant department or person responsible for recruitment.

Depending on the organisation, this could be:

• Human Resources

• Human Capital

• Engineering

• Maintenance

• Finance

• Operations

A direct and professional application can sometimes reach the right person faster than simply sending an email to a general inbox.

3. Don't Underestimate Physical Applications

For some industries in Zambia, walking into a company and submitting a properly prepared application can still be useful, particularly when the organisation accepts physical applications.

This is especially relevant when looking for industrial attachments.

Before going, prepare your documents properly.

Your application package might include:

• Application/introductory letter

• CV

• University attachment letter

• Recommendation letter, where applicable

• NRC copy

• Academic documents or other certificates requested by the organisation

Put the documents in a clean envelope and clearly indicate what the application is for.

For example:

APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT – MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Don't just walk into a company carrying loose papers and hand them to the first person you meet.

Present yourself professionally.

4. Look Around the Industrial Areas

If you are looking for a technical attachment or entry-level position, think about where companies in your field are located.

For example, you could research companies operating around:

Lusaka

• Light industrial areas

• Heavy industrial areas

• Manufacturing and processing areas

• Chilanga industrial corridor

Copperbelt

• Kitwe

• Ndola

• Chingola

• Chililabombwe

These areas have many organisations involved in mining, manufacturing, engineering, logistics, processing and other industries.

North-Western Province

Solwezi and surrounding areas have organisations supporting the mining and wider industrial sector.

The point isn't to randomly visit every company you see.

Research first.

Make a list of organisations that actually operate in your field.

5. Use Your University Network

If you are a student, your university can be one of your most useful sources of information.

Talk to:

• Lecturers

• Department staff

• Previous students

• Classmates

• Alumni

• Attachment coordinators

A lecturer may know that a company is looking for students even before the opportunity becomes widely known.

Your classmates can also be useful.

If one student finds out that a particular company accepts attachment students, that information can help others.

Don't treat every other student as competition.

Sometimes your classmates are the people who will tell you about the opportunity that eventually gets you into the industry.

6. Use Alumni Connections

If you know someone who studied at your university and now works in an organisation you're interested in, don't be afraid to introduce yourself professionally.

You don't necessarily have to ask them:

"Can you give me a job?"

Instead, ask for guidance.

For example:

"Good afternoon. My name is [Name], and I'm currently studying Civil Engineering at The University of Zambia. I noticed that you also studied at UNZA and are currently working at [Company]. I'm currently looking for an industrial attachment and would appreciate any advice on how your company normally receives attachment applications."

That's much better than simply asking someone to find you a job.

7. Contact Professional Organisations

Depending on your profession, professional organisations can also help you connect with people in your industry.

For example, graduates and students may benefit from becoming familiar with organisations such as:

• Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)

• Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)

• Zambia Institute of Human Resource Management (ZIHRM)

• Other professional bodies relevant to their field

Don't join an organisation simply because you think membership automatically gives you a job.

Instead, use professional networks to learn about your industry, meet professionals and become more familiar with opportunities in your field.

8. Attend Industry Events

If you have an opportunity to attend an industry event, don't just attend and leave.

Introduce yourself.

Talk to people.

Ask questions.

Find out which companies are operating in the industry and what skills they are looking for.

Events such as trade shows, career fairs, professional meetings and industry conferences can give you an opportunity to meet people you would probably never encounter through an online application.

You don't have to walk around handing your CV to everyone.

Sometimes simply making a professional connection can be valuable later.

9. Follow Up on Your Applications

Suppose you submitted an attachment application to a company but haven't heard anything.

Don't immediately assume that you have been rejected.

If appropriate, follow up professionally after a reasonable period.

You could send:

Subject: Follow-Up – Industrial Attachment Application

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to kindly follow up on my industrial attachment application submitted on [date].

I remain interested in the opportunity to undertake my attachment with your organisation and would appreciate any update regarding my application.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,
[Your Name]
[Phone Number]

Keep it short and respectful.

10. Don't Apply Only When You See an Advert

This is probably the biggest lesson from this article.

There are two approaches:

Passive job searching

You:

• Check Facebook.

• Check job boards.

• Check LinkedIn.

• Wait for an advert.

• Apply.

• Wait again.

Proactive job searching

You:

• Identify companies.

• Research them.

• Find their contact details.

• Prepare your documents.

• Send applications.

• Follow up.

• Build professional connections.

• Keep looking.

Neither approach guarantees a job.

But the second approach gives you more opportunities to put yourself in front of potential employers.

My Experience Getting an Industrial Attachment

When I was looking for my first industrial attachment as a Mechanical Engineering student, I didn't wait for an attachment advert to appear.

I started by looking for industries and companies near where I lived that were doing mechanical-related work.

I identified several organisations, including:

• Mulonga Water

• Konkola Copper Mines

• Multotec

• Sulzer Pumps

• Mineral Link

I applied to all of them.

I prepared my:

• CV

• University attachment letter

• NRC copy

• Recommendation letter from KCM Chililabombwe

I wasn't thinking about whether the companies were going to pay me. My priority was to find somewhere I could learn and gain practical experience.

Three days later, I received a call from HR at Sulzer informing me that I could start on Monday.

That became my first industrial attachment.

Interestingly, after the people I worked with saw my commitment and willingness to learn, the bosses decided to give me a monthly allowance during my two months and two weeks with the company.

The lesson for me was simple:

Don't wait for an opportunity to be advertised before you start looking for it.

Build Your Own List of Target Companies

If you're currently looking for an internship, attachment or entry-level job, try this exercise.

Write down 20 companies.

Choose organisations that are relevant to your career. Don't send the exact same application to all 20 companies.

Customize it.

Mention the company by name and explain why you are interested in gaining experience there.

Final Advice

Finding an attachment or your first job can take patience.

You may apply to ten companies and hear nothing.

You may apply to another five and receive rejections.

Then one company may call you.

Don't let the first few rejections stop you.

Check job boards, but don't depend entirely on them.

Look for companies yourself. Build connections. Send direct applications. Visit organisations where appropriate. Talk to professionals. Follow up.

Most importantly, when looking for an internship or industrial attachment, don't make "How much will they pay me?" your first question.

Ask yourself:

"What can I learn here, and what experience will I gain?"

The experience you gain today can help you qualify for the job you want tomorrow.

Sometimes the opportunity you're looking for isn't being advertised. You just have to be proactive enough to find it.
