For many students, getting an industrial attachment or internship is the first opportunity to experience what working in the industry is actually like.

It can also be one of the most stressful parts of university.

You have your academic work to worry about, deadlines are approaching, and suddenly you are expected to find a company willing to take you on as an attachment student.

For engineering students at Mulungushi University, industrial attachment is not simply something you do if you feel like it. It is part of the programme requirements. Students are expected to complete their industrial attachments, and completing the required attachment is necessary for graduation.

At the end of the semester, when the university closes for vacation, students have about two months and a few days of holiday time to use for attachment-related activities, depending on the academic calendar and attachment arrangements.

The university also provides eligible students with industrial attachment letters, which are important when approaching companies.

But having an attachment letter does not mean a company will automatically accept you.

You still have to look for the opportunity and convince an organisation to give you a chance.

How I Found My First Industrial Attachment

When I was looking for my first attachment, I decided not to wait for someone to tell me where to apply.

I started by thinking about the type of work I wanted to gain experience in and the companies near where I lived.

As a Mechanical Engineering student, I was looking for companies where I could get exposure to mechanical engineering work.

I searched for industries and companies around my area and came up with a list that included:

• Mulonga Water

• Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Nchanga

• Multotec

• Sulzer Pumps

• Mineral Link

I then applied to all of them.

This is one thing I would strongly recommend to students looking for attachment:

Don't apply to only one company and wait.

You might be lucky and get accepted immediately, but you might also wait weeks or never receive a response.

Applying to several relevant companies gives you more opportunities.

What I Submitted

For my applications, I prepared a small package of documents that showed who I was, where I came from academically, and why I was looking for industrial attachment.

I submitted:

• My CV

• My industrial attachment letter from the university

• A copy of my NRC

• A recommendation letter from KCM Konkola

Having these documents ready made it easier to apply to different companies.

Before starting your search, make sure your documents are properly prepared. You don't want to find an opportunity and then realise that you are missing an important document.

The Call From Sulzer

After submitting my applications, I didn't know which company would respond first.

Then, three days later, I received a phone call from the HR department at Sulzer Pumps.

I was asked when "can you start?" I answered even tomorrow I can start then informed that I could start my industrial attachment on Monday.

Just like that, I had secured my first attachment.

It was a good reminder that sometimes getting an opportunity is not necessarily about knowing someone. You have to put yourself in a position where an opportunity can find you.

If I had only applied to one company, I could have easily spent weeks waiting for a response.

Instead, I identified several companies, prepared my documents and applied.

What Students Can Learn From This

My experience may be different from yours, but there are some practical lessons that can help when looking for an attachment or internship.

1. Start Looking Early

Don't wait until the last week before your university closes.

Start identifying potential companies early.

Make a list of organisations that operate in your field and find out whether they accept students for attachment or internship.

For engineering students, for example, this could include:

• Mining companies

• Manufacturing companies

• Engineering firms

• Construction companies

• Power and energy companies

• Water utilities

• Automotive companies

• Processing plants

• Workshops

• Telecommunications companies, depending on your programme

• Government institutions

• Research and technical institutions

The important thing is to look for organisations where you can actually gain experience related to your programme.

2. Don't Limit Yourself to Big Companies

It is easy to think that you must get attachment at one of the biggest companies in Zambia.

Of course, companies such as mines, banks, large engineering companies and multinational organisations can provide excellent opportunities.

But don't ignore smaller companies.

A smaller engineering company may give you the opportunity to actually work alongside technicians and engineers, rather than spending your entire attachment period doing nothing.

When choosing an attachment, think about what you will learn, not just the name of the company and how much the company will offer you.

3. Apply to Multiple Companies

This was probably one of the most important things I did.

I didn't apply to only Sulzer.

I identified several companies and sent applications to all of them.

You shouldn't interpret silence from one company as rejection from the entire industry.

Apply to multiple suitable organisations.

4. Make Your CV Suitable for an Attachment

You don't need a CV that looks like someone with ten years of experience.

If you're a student, your CV should focus on what you actually have.

Include things such as:

• Your education

• Programme and year of study

• Relevant coursework

• Technical skills

• Computer skills

• Engineering software you know

• Projects you've worked on

• Previous experience

• Any previous attachment

• Leadership or extracurricular activities where relevant

And most importantly, don't lie on your CV.

If you have never used AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, MATLAB or SolidWorks professionally, don't claim that you are an expert.

5. Get Your Documents Ready

Before you start applying, prepare your attachment package.

Depending on what the organisation requests, this could include:

• Curriculum Vitae

• University attachment letter

• Recommendation letter

• NRC/passport copy

• Academic records

• Certificates

• Cover letter or application letter

• Other documents requested by the company

Keep both printed and electronic copies where possible.

6. Use Your Existing Connections — But Don't Depend on Them

If you have previously done an attachment, internship, volunteering or school placement at an organisation, the people you met there may know other companies or departments that accept students.

A lecturer, classmate, former supervisor, family member or professional contact may also know about opportunities.

There is nothing wrong with asking for information or a referral.

But don't make the mistake of thinking:

"I don't know anyone, so I can't get an attachment."

I didn't rely on one company or one person. I searched for companies myself and applied.

7. Don't Be Afraid to Follow Up

Sometimes your application may be sitting in an HR office or inbox and nobody has looked at it yet.

If an organisation allows applicants to follow up, you can politely ask about the status of your application after a reasonable amount of time.

Keep it professional.

For example:

Subject: Follow-up on Industrial Attachment Application

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to kindly follow up on my application for industrial attachment submitted on [date]. I would be grateful if you could provide an update regarding the status of my application.

I remain interested in the opportunity to undertake my industrial attachment with your organisation.

Kind regards,
[Your Name]

8. Be Prepared When They Call

Getting the phone call is only the beginning.

When a company calls you, make sure you know:

• Your programme

• Your year of study

• Your university

• When you are available

• How long your attachment is supposed to last

• What type of experience you are looking for

Speak professionally and be respectful.

You never know when that first phone call could turn into an interview or an actual placement.

Don't Choose an Attachment Based on the Allowance

One thing I would advise students is not to make money your first consideration when looking for an attachment or internship.

When you are applying, don't start by asking:

"How much are they going to pay me?"

Your main goal should be to learn, gain practical experience and build your professional skills.

When I was applying for my first attachment, I honestly wasn't thinking about how much I would be paid or whether the companies would pay me at all. I was looking for companies where I could gain meaningful experience in Mechanical Engineering.

I was more interested in finding a place where I could work, learn from experienced people and understand how the things I was learning at university were actually done in industry.

Interestingly, after I started working at Sulzer and the people there saw my commitment, willingness to learn and dedication to the work, the bosses decided to give me an allowance every month.

I worked with them for two months and two weeks, and during that period I received a monthly allowance.

The important lesson here is that you shouldn't enter an attachment expecting to be paid.

If the company offers an allowance, that's a bonus. Appreciate it.

But if you make payment your main requirement, you could miss a very good learning opportunity simply because the company doesn't offer an allowance.

At this stage of your career, experience can be more valuable than the money.

The skills you gain, the people you meet, the work you do and the experience you add to your CV can help you long after the attachment has ended.

Learn first. Earn later.

If you find a good company that can give you valuable practical experience but doesn't offer an allowance, don't automatically reject the opportunity.

Of course, students have different financial circumstances, and transport and accommodation costs are real concerns. But where possible, choose an attachment based primarily on what you will learn and the experience you will gain. Your first attachment is an opportunity to get your foot in the door.

What If You Don't Get a Response?

Don't give up after sending five applications.

Sometimes companies don't respond to students because they don't have space, they have already filled their attachment positions, or they simply don't process every application.

That doesn't mean you should stop looking.

Keep applying to suitable organisations.

Visit companies where appropriate, send applications by email when instructed, check company career pages and speak to your university's attachment or placement office.

The goal is to increase your chances of getting an opportunity.

Your First Attachment Is About Learning

One mistake students can make is focusing too much on the company name and how much that company will pay them, when I first to Sulzer I didn't even think about getting paid or how much they will pay me.

Of course, getting attachment at a well-known company is great.

But remember why you are going there.

You are there to learn how things work outside the classroom.

As an engineering student, for example, you might have learned about machines, manufacturing, maintenance, materials, thermodynamics or engineering drawings in class.

Industrial attachment gives you the opportunity to see how those concepts are applied in the real world.

Ask questions.

Observe.

Take notes.

Learn from technicians, engineers and other experienced workers.

And don't be afraid to admit that you don't know something.

You are there as a student.

My Biggest Lesson

Looking back at how I got my first attachment, the biggest lesson for me was simple:

Don't wait for opportunities to come to you. Go looking for them.

I identified companies near me that were doing the kind of work I wanted to learn, prepared my documents and applied.

Three days later, I received a call from Sulzer Pumps asking me to start on Monday.

That experience taught me that you don't always need to know exactly which company will say yes.

Sometimes you simply need to apply enough places to give yourself a chance.

Your first application might be rejected.

The second might receive no response.

The third might also fail.

Then the fourth company might be the one that gives you your opportunity. So keep applying.

Final Advice to Students

If you're currently looking for industrial attachment or an internship, don't wait until everyone else has already found theirs.

Start now.

Make a list of companies.

Prepare your CV.

Get your attachment letter.

Prepare your other supporting documents.

Apply to multiple relevant organisations.

Follow up professionally.

And most importantly, don't be discouraged by rejection.

Your first attachment may not be at your dream company, but it can be the beginning of your professional career.

Your degree teaches you the theory. Industrial attachment gives you the opportunity to see how that knowledge is used in the real world.
