Patient Catering Assistant – Mary Begg Health Services | Ndola, Zambia.

About the Role

Mary Begg Health Services is looking for an experienced and dedicated Patient Catering Assistant to join its Catering Services Team in Ndola. This role is responsible for supporting the preparation, handling, and delivery of nutritious meals while maintaining the highest standards of food hygiene, cleanliness, and patient care.

The successful candidate will work closely with the catering team to ensure patients receive quality meals on time and that all food preparation and kitchen operations comply with health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

As a Patient Catering Assistant, you will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and handling food safely in accordance with food hygiene regulations and hospital standards.

  • Weighing, portioning, and serving meals according to approved catering procedures.

  • Delivering food and beverages to patients in a professional, respectful, and compassionate manner.

  • Collecting meal trays and ensuring dishes and catering equipment are cleaned after use.

  • Monitoring food quality, expiry dates, and stock rotation using the FIFO (First In, First Out) principle.

  • Maintaining adequate stock levels and reporting shortages where necessary.

  • Cleaning kitchens, food preparation areas, storage facilities, and catering equipment.

  • Using cleaning chemicals and detergents safely while wearing the appropriate protective equipment.

  • Reporting damaged equipment, maintenance issues, hazards, or health and safety concerns promptly.

  • Participating in mandatory training, refresher courses, and continuous professional development.

  • Following departmental catering hygiene, food safety, and personal hygiene policies at all times.

  • Wearing the required protective clothing and maintaining a neat, professional appearance.

  • Supporting patient safety and contributing to a clean and welcoming healthcare environment.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should possess:

  • Full Grade 12 School Certificate with passes in Mathematics and English.

  • Diploma in Food Production and Catering or a related qualification.

  • Valid Food Handler's Certificate.

  • Minimum of 2 years' relevant work experience in catering, hospitality, or healthcare food services.

  • Good written and spoken English communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, flexible, and committed to delivering excellent service.
