First Quantum is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Metallurgist based in Solwezi.

About the Role

The Metallurgist will provide technical support to plant operations by monitoring metallurgical performance, analysing process data, identifying improvement opportunities, and implementing optimisation initiatives. The successful candidate will work closely with operations, maintenance, laboratory, and engineering teams to maximise plant recovery, productivity, and operational efficiency while maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

Process Monitoring & Optimisation

- Monitor plant performance and analyse metallurgical data to optimise recovery and production.

- Evaluate processing parameters and recommend improvements to maximise operational efficiency.

- Conduct metallurgical investigations and implement corrective actions where required.

- Monitor plant throughput, recoveries, concentrate quality, and reagent consumption.

- Identify process bottlenecks and recommend practical improvement initiatives.

Technical Support

- Provide day-to-day metallurgical support to plant operations.

- Work closely with operations personnel to improve plant performance.

- Develop operating procedures and technical guidelines.

- Investigate production losses and recommend sustainable solutions.

- Support plant commissioning, troubleshooting, and process improvement projects.

Sampling & Laboratory Management

- Ensure representative sampling procedures are followed.

- Interpret laboratory results and provide technical recommendations.

- Liaise with laboratory personnel to maintain analytical accuracy and quality standards.

- Support metallurgical test work and process trials.

Reporting & Data Analysis

- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly metallurgical performance reports.

- Analyse production data and identify trends affecting plant performance.

- Maintain accurate metallurgical records and process documentation.

- Present technical findings and recommendations to management.

Safety, Health & Environment

- Promote compliance with company Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) standards.

- Participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.

- Ensure all metallurgical activities comply with environmental regulations.

- Promote continuous improvement and safe working practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

- Full Grade Twelve (12) School Certificate.

- Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

- Relevant experience in mineral processing or metallurgical plant operations.

- Practical knowledge of flotation, crushing, grinding, and concentration processes.

- Experience analysing metallurgical performance data.

- Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.

- Experience using metallurgical software will be an added advantage.
