Job Description
Yalelo Limited is looking for a qualified and experienced Auto Mechanic to join its maintenance team in Siavonga, Southern Province. This full-time position offers an excellent opportunity for skilled mechanics with experience in heavy equipment, fleet maintenance, and hydraulic systems to work for one of Zambia's leading aquaculture and food production companies.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that company vehicles and equipment remain in excellent working condition through preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, inspections, and compliance with health and safety standards.
About the Role
As an Auto Mechanic at Yalelo Limited, you will be responsible for maintaining the reliability and performance of company vehicles, machinery, and mechanical equipment. Your work will focus on preventing equipment failures, responding quickly to breakdowns, and carrying out quality repairs that minimize downtime and improve operational efficiency.
This role requires technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to workplace safety while working in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Preventive and Corrective Maintenance
The successful candidate will:
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance according to company procedures and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) recommendations.
Carry out routine servicing to improve equipment reliability.
Ensure maintenance work is completed on schedule.
Minimize repeat mechanical failures through quality workmanship.
Breakdown Diagnosis and Repairs
Responsibilities include:
Diagnosing mechanical faults accurately and efficiently.
Repairing equipment with minimal operational downtime.
Identifying root causes of recurring mechanical failures.
Supporting continuous improvement through effective maintenance practices.
Equipment Inspection and Condition Monitoring
The role also involves:
Conducting regular inspections of mechanical equipment.
Detecting early signs of wear, damage, or potential failure.
Preparing accurate inspection and maintenance reports.
Recommending timely replacement of worn components to prevent costly breakdowns.
Component Overhaul and Replacement
The Auto Mechanic will repair and replace components including:
Engines
Gearboxes
Brake systems
Suspension systems
Steering assemblies
Drivetrain components
All repairs should meet manufacturer specifications while maintaining high standards of workmanship and eliminating unnecessary rework.
Equipment Reliability and Continuous Improvement
The successful candidate will help:
Reduce equipment downtime.
Improve equipment availability and reliability.
Control maintenance and repair costs.
Maintain high operational efficiency across the fleet and equipment.
Teamwork and Communication
Applicants will be expected to:
Report equipment defects promptly.
Maintain accurate maintenance records.
Work closely with operators, supervisors, and fellow maintenance staff.
Contribute positively to the maintenance team's overall performance.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
Safety is a key part of this role. Responsibilities include:
Following all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies and procedures.
Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Complying with permit-to-work requirements.
Maintaining clean and organized work areas.
Preventing environmental incidents during maintenance activities.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess:
Trade Certificate or Diploma in Motor Vehicle Mechanics.
Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
ZAQA-certified academic qualifications.
Registration with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
Minimum of four (4) years' experience in mechanical maintenance.
Practical experience maintaining heavy equipment or fleet vehicles.
Experience working with hydraulic systems.
Added Advantage
Experience in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry will be an added advantage.
