ZSIC General Insurance Limited is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to support its agricultural insurance portfolio across crop, livestock, and agribusiness risks.
The Underwriter – Agriculture will support the evaluation, pricing, acceptance, and management of agricultural insurance risks. The role will contribute to maintaining a profitable and compliant agricultural insurance portfolio while ensuring that products and underwriting practices effectively address the needs of clients across the agricultural sector.
The position will involve both office-based underwriting activities and field engagements with farms, cooperatives, agro-dealers, and other agricultural stakeholders.
Evaluate and assess insurance risks associated with crops, livestock, and other agricultural enterprises.
Analyse agricultural production risks and determine appropriate underwriting approaches.
Develop and implement underwriting guidelines specific to agricultural insurance.
Ensure agricultural risks are appropriately priced in accordance with ZSIC-GI standards.
Make decisions regarding the acceptance, rejection, and rating of agricultural risks within delegated authority.
Provide recommendations to management on high-value or complex agricultural risks.
Contribute to the design and enhancement of agricultural insurance products based on market and client needs.
Work with banks, cooperatives, farmer associations, and other agricultural stakeholders to support tailored insurance solutions.
Participate in product testing and provide feedback on product performance.
Identify opportunities for improvements to agricultural insurance products and services.
Ensure accurate and timely issuance of agricultural insurance policies.
Review and approve proposals, quotations, and policy endorsements within delegated authority.
Ensure underwriting activities comply with internal policies and procedures.
Maintain compliance with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Ensure appropriate documentation and records are maintained.
Provide technical underwriting input and guidance to the sales team on agricultural insurance products.
Participate in client meetings, presentations, and training activities.
Support initiatives aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of agricultural insurance.
Build and maintain professional relationships with strategic partners in the agricultural sector.
Liaise with claims teams and provide technical input on agricultural insurance claims.
Support accurate claims assessment through risk analysis and review of loss history.
Provide underwriting information relevant to the assessment of agricultural losses.
Support underwriting practices designed to minimise exposure to fraudulent claims.
Exercise sound judgement when evaluating agricultural risks.
Balance profitability, client requirements, and overall risk exposure when making underwriting decisions.
Escalate high-value, unusual, or complex risks to the appropriate level of management.
Provide recommendations based on risk analysis and available evidence.
Applicants should possess:
Grade 12 Certificate with at least five O-Level credits, including Mathematics and English.
Bachelor's Degree in one of the following or a related field:
Insurance
Agribusiness
Agricultural Economics
Agronomy
Agro-Forestry
Finance
Business Administration
Risk Management
Professional insurance qualification such as ACII or CII.
Valid driver's licence.
Minimum of three (3) years' experience in underwriting, insurance, or risk assessment.
Strong understanding of agricultural production systems and associated risks.
Knowledge of agricultural insurance mechanisms.
Good understanding of underwriting principles and risk assessment methodologies.
Knowledge of actuarial pricing concepts.
Strong analytical and research capabilities.
Excellent report-writing skills.
Strong negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships.
Familiarity with insurance regulatory frameworks in Zambia.
Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work with insurance management systems.
The successful candidate will work within the ZSIC-GI office environment and interact with various departments across Head Office and branches.
The role also requires travel to agricultural sites, including:
Farms
Cooperatives
Agro-dealers
Agricultural project sites
Field activities may include agricultural risk assessments, loss verification, client engagement, and interaction with farmers and other industry stakeholders.
